Fr. Drew's letter for Holy Week

My Dear Parish,

Jesus’ earthly life is filled with so many wonderful deeds, teachings, miracles, and signs for us to consider. Certain of those deeds have the greatest meaning for our salvation. I mean the deeds that we consider during Holy Week.

The entry into Jerusalem. It helps us see that Jesus fulfills the expectations that God’s chosen people had for the Messiah. It reminds us of how easily we can reject the Lord.


The Last Supper. Jesus shows his disciples that he wants them to serve. He will give them great spiritual power, but they are to use as Jesus used his power, not to be served but to serve. Jesus institutes the ministerial Priesthood and the Sacrament of his Body and Blood.


Good Friday. Jesus is betrayed and suffers his sorrowful passion and death at the hands of sinners in order to offer all mankind the salvation and redemption we need to enjoy the fullness of life.


Holy Saturday. Jesus rests in the tomb and descends into the realm of the dead where he freely walks about and claims for himself all the holy souls who had been confined there awaiting entrance into blessedness.


Easter Sunday. Just as he said he would, Jesus rose from the dead. Early in the morning the women went to the tomb but did not find him. Instead a vision of angels announced he was alive. Indeed, he did rise, and appeared to the apostles.

May our reflection on these moments secure for us a deeper love of the Lord who has redeemed us all.
